The Bolgatanga–Bawku road project has experienced delays due to funding-related disagreements between the government and financiers, according to the Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdallah Salifu.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s “Day Break Upper East” programme in Bolgatanga, Mr. Abdallah explained that although the contractor had previously mobilised to resume work, progress stalled after financial arrangements linked to the project encountered challenges between the government and financing institutions.
He noted that earlier engagements had created expectations for contractors to return to site following renewed commitments, but subsequent negotiations altered the pace of implementation, leading to a temporary pause in works on the stretch.
Mr. Abdallah, however, said discussions are ongoing among key stakeholders, including parliamentary leadership and sector actors, to resolve the funding concerns and restore progress on the road project.
Beyond the Bolgatanga–Bawku corridor, he also assured that the Upper East Region will not be left out of a proposed $500 million feeder roads programme, explaining that government is still receiving project proposals from Members of Parliament, district assemblies, and other local actors for consideration and prioritisation.
According to him, the programme has not yet been fully allocated to specific regions or projects, and ongoing consultations will determine which road interventions are prioritised under the funding arrangement.
He expressed confidence that the region would benefit from the initiative once project selection is completed.
Mr. Abdallah further defended the performance of Members of Parliament in the Upper East Region, insisting they are actively involved in development delivery rather than being inactive as sometimes suggested in public discourse.
He added that some MPs are also personally engaged in lobbying efforts to restart stalled projects and facilitate new ones, including key road network stretches and feeder road interventions across the region.
According to him, these combined efforts demonstrate that MPs are actively working with the central government and agencies to push development, even as funding constraints continue to affect the pace of some major projects.
