The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) has suspended Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) from all association activities, citing an escalating governance crisis and what it describes as the failure of the university’s Governing Council to engage in resolution efforts.

In a letter dated June 26, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the BTU Governing Council, VCTU-G said the decision followed deliberations at its meeting on June 15, 2026. The association reviewed recent developments at the university, including the suspension, investigation and subsequent termination of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, the demotion of two senior officers, and a warning issued to another senior official.

According to VCTU-G, repeated attempts to engage the Governing Council in dialogue were unsuccessful, undermining mediation efforts and limiting the association’s ability to provide collegial support within Ghana’s technical university system.

The association also expressed concern over what it described as the Council’s disregard for directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) aimed at resolving the dispute. It said the Council’s actions amounted to an “unprecedented exercise of authority” that departs from established principles of university governance.

VCTU-G further referenced a presidential directive that governing councils and chairpersons of public institutions should focus on policy direction and oversight rather than day-to-day administration, arguing that BTU’s situation appears to contradict that guidance.

The association said the suspension is intended to allow space for reflection, dialogue and the restoration of confidence in governance processes at the university.

It added that the decision was taken after careful consideration and reaffirmed its commitment to institutional autonomy, peaceful coexistence, and the integrity of Ghana’s technical university system.
