The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Russia Branch, Dr. Abongo Ajene, has expressed confidence that the NPP will capture the Bolgatanga Central parliamentary seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next general elections.

Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, Dr. Ajene extended goodwill to delegates ahead of the NPP’s constituency elections scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026. He expressed optimism that the elections would be conducted peacefully and would produce leaders capable of steering the party’s affairs at the constituency level over the next four years.

“This coming Saturday, we are going to have our constituencies elections. Let me use this opportunity to wish all candidates success, and at the end of the day, we have our election peacefully, and we elect our candidates or our leaders who are going to take the affairs of the party constituency leadership for four years.”

According to him, the party’s elected constituency executives will play a key role in strengthening the NPP’s political fortunes in Bolgatanga Central and positioning it to wrest the seat from incumbent MP Isaac Adongo and the NDC.

“These are the leaders that we are going to elect, that are going to win the constituency for Balgatanga Central from the NDC. We are taking it, we are taking the seat from Isaac Adongo, and the internal conflict between Isaac Adongo camp and Prosper camp, we use the opportunity to take the seat from the NDC.”

Dr. Ajene attributed his confidence not to any new political strategy but to what he described as the NDC’s poor performance in government. He argued that the NDC’s record in office has been characterized by corruption, mismanagement of public resources, and inadequate development, particularly in the Upper East Region.

“We are not going to use any strategy, but we’re going to use NDC performance and take the seat from there. NDC has never done anything well for Ghana. The only thing that they do is, if they come in, the rate of corruption and misappropriation of funds is always high. There’s no development in the Upper East Region,” he said.

He maintained that despite the NDC’s long-standing dominance in Bolgatanga Central since the beginning of the Fourth Republic, the constituency and the wider Upper East Region have not witnessed the level of development residents deserve. The NPP Russia Branch Chairman further compared development in the Upper East Region with that of the Upper West Region, claiming that the latter has benefited from significant infrastructure projects, including an airport and healthcare facilities, while the former continues to lag behind.

“Since 1992, NDC has been taking the seat, but there is no improvement in the Upper East Region, especially Bolga. All the development is going to Wa, and Wa is our junior region. They have airport, they have all the development, they have new hospitals,” Dr. Ajene lamented.

Responding to suggestions that plans are underway to construct an airport in the Upper East Region, Dr. Ajene argued that proposed projects should not be celebrated until visible progress has been made. He also cited concerns about completed or near-completed health facilities that have not been been fully operationalized, saying such delays have affected healthcare delivery and employment opportunities for health professionals.

He further expressed concern about the continued need for some Ghanaians to seek medical treatment abroad despite the availability of health infrastructure that could be be utilized locally.

Based on these concerns, Dr. Ajene said he remains convinced that the NPP has a realistic opportunity to win the Bolgatanga Central seat from the NDC in future elections.
