The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, has called for the expansion of the government’s Aquaculture for Food and Jobs (AFJ) Programme to more communities in the district.
She made the call during the first tilapia harvest by a fish farming group in Bongo Soe under the programme.
Mrs. Ayamga said the initiative demonstrates the potential of aquaculture to create jobs, improve food security and support livelihoods in rural communities.
She appealed to the Fisheries Commission to extend the programme to other communities with water bodies suitable for fish farming.
“Expanding the initiative would increase fish production while creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people and women,” she said.
The DCE disclosed that the Bongo District Assembly is exploring ways to support communities without dams by providing water infrastructure to enable them to undertake fish farming and other agricultural activities.
She encouraged residents to take advantage of government-supported livelihood programmes and ensure their sustainability.
The AFJ Programme, launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, provides beneficiaries with fish fingerlings, feed, training and extension support to increase aquaculture production.
