An aspiring Upper East Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Samuel Akumbo Awintariba, popularly known as Wakiki, has been disqualified from the race after the party’s vetting committee determined that he exceeded the party’s constitutional age limit for the position.
The development followed a petition filed by a member of Wakiki’s campaign team, challenging the eligibility of fellow aspirant Jonathan Abugre, popularly known as Contempt.
The petition alleged that Mr. Abugre was above the age required under the NPP Constitution to contest for the position of Youth Organiser. The party’s constitution sets the maximum age for aspiring constituency, regional and national Youth Organisers at 40 years.
During the vetting exercise held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the committee scrutinised the records of both aspirants. The committee established that Mr. Abugre was 39 years old and therefore qualified to contest.
However, the committee’s examination of Wakiki’s documents revealed that he was 41 years old at the time he filed his nomination, rendering him ineligible under the party’s constitution. The committee subsequently disqualified him from the contest.
With the disqualification, Mr. Abugre becomes the sole qualified aspirant for the Regional Youth Organiser position and has consequently been declared unopposed.
He is expected to be sworn into office alongside other regional executives after the NPP conducts its regional elections in August.
