Residents of Lungu in the Bongo District have raised GH¢75,370 to purchase a tricycle to be used as an ambulance, hospital beds and other medical equipment for the Lungu CHPS Compound to improve healthcare delivery and emergency response services.
The equipment, funded through contributions from residents and other members of the community living outside Lungu, was handed over to the facility during a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, health personnel, youth groups and community members.
The items include a tricycle ambulance, five hospital beds, two blood pressure apparatuses, a body scale, five fans and privacy curtains. The community also constructed a garage to provide secure parking for the ambulance.
Assembly Member for the area John Awine Ayamga said the fundraising initiative began during Lungu Day, an annual community event held on May 1.
He said the initial objective was to raise enough money to purchase a tricycle ambulance to improve emergency transportation to and from the CHPS Compound, but the community was unable to raise the required amount during the first fundraising effort.
Mr. Ayamga said continued contributions from residents, well-wishers and members of the Lungu community living elsewhere eventually generated enough money to purchase the ambulance and additional medical equipment.
Speaking on behalf of the Tindaana, Aduko Atanga thanked individuals and groups who contributed to the initiative and appealed to the Bongo District Health Directorate, the District Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament for Bongo, non-governmental organisations and development partners to provide additional support to the facility.
Bright Ayingayuure Atongo, speaking on behalf of a section of the young men in the community, said the equipment would help improve healthcare delivery and emergency transportation, particularly for pregnant women, children and patients requiring urgent medical attention.
The Chief of Lungu, Naba Nyaaba Kolisungo Maale Ziiro, called on the Bongo District Health Directorate and other relevant authorities to consider upgrading the CHPS Compound to a health centre.
He said the community’s investment in the ambulance, hospital beds and other equipment demonstrated its commitment to improving healthcare and its readiness to support health authorities in expanding services.
The Chief expressed hope that an upgrade would enable the facility to provide a wider range of healthcare services to residents of Lungu and surrounding communities.
The equipment was received on behalf of the Lungu CHPS Compound by Donatus Agale.
