Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars have agreed to a 50% slash in their match bonuses.

This was made public by new Sports Minister-Designate Isaac Asiamah in Gabon Monday.

Briefing the press in Port-Gentil, he said: “We are going to have a stake holders meeting to discuss payments for all national teams but in the interim we have held a meeting with the players of the national team and they have agreed to a 50% slash in their bonuses.”

“They [Black Stars] have understood the situation we are in and also understand that the fans and the general public have spoken. The players understand this.”

What it means

A budget proposal the new Ghana government came to meet had indicated $10,000 as bonus per player in each group game (making it $30,000 qualification bonus if the team advanced to the quarterfinals.

Qualifications to the last four would have fetched each player a further $10,000; $12,000 for semis and $15,000 breaking the 35-year Africa Cup of Nations trophy jinx.

But with the new 50% slash agreement between the Black Stars and government, each player now stands to pocket $33,500 should Ghana emerge champions.
