Youth of Abokobisi in the Bongo District have appealed to the government and National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership to address the community’s lack of electricity and potable water and what they describe as their exclusion from government employment and livelihood programmes.
In an open letter addressed to the NDC leadership in Bongo, the youth said residents had consistently supported the party with the expectation that development projects and government opportunities would reach the community.
The letter, signed by Isaac Azure Atule, Youth Organizer of the Abokobisi Polling Station for the NDC, said the community has yet to experience the level of development residents expected.
Mr. Atule cited youth unemployment as one of the major concerns, claiming that no young person from Abokobisi has benefited from the Youth Employment Programme.
He also said no member of the community has benefited from opportunities under the School Feeding Programme, denying local caterers and families the opportunity to participate in the initiative.
Access to potable water is another major challenge raised in the letter, with the youth saying Abokobisi has not benefited from the construction of a borehole.
“No borehole has been drilled in our community. Access to clean and safe drinking water remains a major challenge, affecting the health and well-being of our people,” the letter stated.
Mr. Atule also claimed that no resident of Abokobisi has benefited from the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme, which the youth believe could provide livelihood opportunities for residents.
The letter further raised concerns about the lack of electricity in the community, which Mr. Atule said is affecting education, healthcare delivery, small businesses and the overall development of Abokobisi.
He stressed that the concerns were not intended to create division but to draw the attention of the NDC leadership, government officials, the Member of Parliament and the Bongo District Assembly to the community’s development challenges.
The youth called on the authorities to ensure Abokobisi receives what they described as its fair share of development projects and opportunities under government programmes.
“We remain committed citizens who believe in development, fairness and accountability. We hope our concerns will be heard and addressed,” Mr. Atule stated.
The youth are seeking improved access to electricity, potable water, employment and livelihood programmes, as well as other development interventions they say would improve living conditions and create opportunities in the community.
