MTN Ghana says it is implementing a range of measures to conserve energy, reduce waste and protect the environment as part of its sustainability agenda for the period 2025 to 2030. The company says its sustainability strategy is built around four key pillars: doing for the planet, doing for people, doing it right and doing it for good.
Acting Senior Manager for Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, Efua Falconer, disclosed this during a media and stakeholders engagement in Tamale as the company marks its 30th anniversary in Ghana. She said sustainability must become a collective responsibility, urging individuals, institutions and businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily activities.
“It is the small things that we do that, you know, we get the positive outcomes to those initiatives,” she said.
Ms. Falconer said MTN Ghana has introduced several measures at its offices to reduce its environmental footprint and conserve resources.
“Nobody in MTN Ghana carries or drinks from the plastic bottle in their office. And we are hoping that staff will carry it along wherever they go. So every staff member carries a flask where you put your water in so that you don’t have to be using the plastic bottle,” she indicated.
“Our lighting system, you walk in, and the light comes on. You move out, and it goes off. You’re conserving energy. Our taps in the washrooms, you know, you put your hand under, and then it wipes. You take your hand off. It’s all conserving energy,” she added.
According to Ms. Falconer, MTN Ghana has also significantly reduced its reliance on paper through digitalisation.
“For about three, four years now, we don’t use paper in the office. We are going digital,” she said.
She said printers had been removed from most offices, with only limited printing facilities maintained in selected offices. Ms. Falconer urged the public to adopt similar practices at home and in workplaces, including switching off lights, air conditioners and television sets when they are not in use.
She said such seemingly small actions could contribute to broader efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions.
Ms. Falconer said MTN Ghana has, over the past three years, dedicated time to educating its employees, stakeholders and the public on sustainability, including energy conservation, environmental protection, diversity, accountability and transparency.
She said August has been designated as the company’s Sustainability Month, during which MTN is undertaking activities including visits to composting and recycling sites and educational engagements with young people. She said the company has also introduced a “Green Moment” during its engagements across the regions to draw attention to sustainability.
In the Greater Accra Region, she said, participants were provided with flowerpots and plants to encourage household gardening and environmental beautification. In the Ashanti Region, MTN distributed solar bulbs to promote energy conservation. As part of the media engagement in Tamale, the company also presented solar lamps to representatives of the Ghana Journalists Association from various regions to promote the sustainability message within their communities.
She said MTN Ghana’s sustainability efforts formed part of a broader commitment towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. She therefore called on the media to help educate the public on sustainable practices and encourage communities to conserve energy, reduce waste and protect the environment.
