Former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr John Kingsley Krugu, has backed the newly elected New Patriotic Party executives in the Upper East Region to lead the party’s rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2028 elections.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr Krugu acknowledged the scale of the task facing the new leadership after the NPP lost all 15 parliamentary seats in the Upper East Region in the 2024 elections, while then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama secured about 76 percent of the presidential vote in the region.
He, however, said the experience and commitment of the newly elected executives provide a strong foundation for the party to rebuild.
Dr Krugu cited the newly elected Regional Chairman, Elvis Atia Awonekai, who previously served as a parliamentary candidate and Regional Secretary, as one of the executives with a deep understanding of the party and its challenges in the region.
“They have been in the trenches together with all of us,” he said, adding that he was excited about the prospects of a youthful team leading the party.
Dr Krugu also called on aspirants who lost in the recent regional elections to put their disappointment behind them and support the newly elected executives in building a stronger and more united party.
According to him, the NPP’s decision to settle its presidential contest before reorganising its party structures was a “masterstroke” that could make reconciliation easier.
He argued that the approach helped prevent the emergence of competing factions within the party built around different presidential aspirants.
Dr Krugu said the recent internal elections largely centred on support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, with candidates presenting themselves as capable of advancing the Bawumia project.
He expressed confidence that the new regional executives would be able to bring the various sides together and mobilise the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
“For somebody who is in opposition, your number one tool, your best tool is unity,” he said.
Dr Krugu said a united NPP could mount a strong campaign in the Upper East Region despite entering the 2028 contest from a disadvantaged electoral position.
Dr Krugu has been appointed spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s NPP Environment and Natural Resources Sector Policy Committee for the 2028 election.
