The Bongo Traditional Area has banned outdoor loudspeakers, public drumming and other forms of excessive noise-making from September 1 to mid-November 2026 as part of efforts to preserve traditional practices and maintain peace.
The directive, announced by the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, on Bolga FM applies to churches, mosques, funerals, roadside evangelism and other activities involving amplified sound or public noise.
Under the directive, churches and mosques can continue their religious activities but are required to conduct services within their premises without directing loudspeakers outside their buildings.
Roadside evangelism involving loudspeakers is also prohibited during the period.
The ban further restricts the playing of drums, group clapping, musical instruments and amplified sound systems in public spaces.
According to the traditional leadership, the increasing use of electronic sound systems, particularly during funerals, has drowned out traditional drumming, dancing and other cultural practices associated with the Bongo people.
The traditional authorities say the restriction is therefore intended to create space for those practices while preserving the cultural heritage and traditional values of the area.
Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum said the Bongo District Assembly, Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities have been notified of the directive.
A joint task force is expected to monitor compliance throughout the traditional area during the period of the ban.
The Paramount Chief urged residents and visitors to respect the directive and warned that people who violate it could face sanctions.
The traditional leadership has appealed to churches, mosques, residents and visitors to cooperate with the authorities throughout the period.
