The Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr Mark-Kurt Nawaane, has urged Ghanaians with financial resources to invest more of their money at home rather than in foreign banks and properties, arguing that greater local investment could help create jobs and accelerate Ghana’s development.
“Putting your money or investing in foreign banks and properties will not help build the Ghana we want,” he said.
Dr Nawaane made the call when he visited the construction site of the government’s 24-Hour Economy Market project at Pelungu in the Nabdam District.
He said Ghana has the human and material resources required to drive its development but needs citizens with capital to have greater confidence in the local economy and invest in productive ventures.
“Ghana has what it takes to develop itself. All that it needs is for the people living in it to have faith and begin investing their resources in Ghana,” he said.
According to the Nabdam MP, the 24-Hour Economy initiative provides opportunities for individuals and businesses to invest in ventures that could create jobs, improve livelihoods and strengthen local economies.
He argued that government could also make greater use of local resources and expertise in executing development projects rather than depending heavily on external borrowing.
Dr Nawaane cited projects such as the 24-Hour Economy markets, saying Ghanaian engineers, contractors and other professionals could be engaged to execute them, allowing more of the economic benefits to remain within the country.
He therefore encouraged individuals and businesses with the financial capacity to explore opportunities to partner government and invest in development projects across Ghana.
At Pelungu, Dr Nawaane said the market project would help improve trading conditions for residents, many of whom currently conduct business along roads and in other unorganised spaces.
He appealed to the contractor to expedite work while ensuring that the project meets the required standards.
Site Engineer for Mac-Deen Ghana Limited, Aboor Desmond, said construction was progressing and could be completed within a year, barring unforeseen challenges.
He assured the MP and residents that the contractor would work to deliver the project to the required standard.
