The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Charles Bawaduah, has supported the re-roofing of a kindergarten block at the Vincent Akurigo Memorial R/C Primary School in Bongo-Soe after a rainstorm destroyed its roof and forced some pupils to learn under trees.
The roof of the KG block was ripped off during a rainstorm on June 28, 2026, disrupting teaching and learning at the school.
Following the destruction, school authorities wrote to the Bongo District Education Directorate and the Bongo District Assembly seeking support to restore the facility.
Assistant Headteacher of the school, Mathew Asobase Aposigna, said the MP subsequently intervened through the Common Fund to support the re-roofing of the classroom block.
He expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the restoration would enable the affected children to return to their classroom.
Mr Aposigna said the MP also visited the school to hand over the restored facility, describing it as the first visit by a sitting Member of Parliament to the school that he could recall.
Despite the re-roofing, he said the KG block still requires additional work, including repairs to damaged doors and windows as well as plastering.
According to him, the MP has indicated that he would engage the Assembly Member and the headteacher to explore ways of addressing the remaining challenges.
Assembly Member for the Awukabisi Electoral Area, Apangaboya Ateo Aboga, also expressed appreciation to the MP for the intervention.
He said the destruction of the roof had forced some of the affected children to learn under trees while the school waited for the facility to be restored.
A community member, Moses Awuka, used the occasion to draw attention to other challenges confronting education in the area, including what he described as inadequate staffing.
He said some teachers are sometimes required to handle two or three classes and appealed to the MP to engage the Ghana Education Service to facilitate the posting of additional trained teachers to schools in the area.
Mr Awuka also appealed for more teaching and learning materials and increased community education to encourage parents to keep their children in school.
He said some children miss school because they are engaged in business activities and other responsibilities, a situation he said affects their education.
