Former Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), Alexis Adugdaa Ayamdor, has secured the second position on the ballot paper after successfully completing vetting to contest the Upper East Regional Secretary position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to Bolga FM in Bolgatanga after the exercise, Mr Ayamdor expressed confidence in his experience and leadership abilities, promising to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and consolidate its electoral gains in the region if elected.

The former DCE, who says he has been involved in the NDC since 1992, believes his experience in grassroots politics, local governance and public administration has prepared him for the position.

He has previously served as an Assembly Member, Presiding Member and District Chief Executive for Bongo.

Mr Ayamdor described the Regional Secretary position as central to the effective administration and coordination of the party’s activities, arguing that its responsibilities extend beyond record-keeping and other administrative duties.

“The role of the Regional Secretary is not just about sitting and writing minutes. It is the anchor of the party at the regional front,” he said.

According to him, the Regional Secretary must serve as a policy adviser to the Regional Executive Committee, coordinate party activities, mobilise members, resolve internal disagreements and safeguard the party’s institutional knowledge and resources.

Mr Ayamdor said one of his priorities would be to consolidate the NDC’s electoral gains in the Upper East Region, where the party won all 15 parliamentary seats in the 2024 general elections.

Despite that achievement, he expressed concern that political opponents were gradually making inroads into the party’s support base.

He therefore called for deliberate efforts to strengthen constituency and branch structures, resolve internal disagreements and increase the party’s share of votes in future elections.

The former Bongo DCE pledged to prioritise regular engagement with constituency executives, branch leaders and other stakeholders rather than conduct party affairs primarily from the regional office.

He said the welfare of party members and their active participation in decision-making would also receive attention under his leadership.

Mr Ayamdor further promised to bridge the gap between experienced party members and younger leaders by promoting cooperation among former Members of Parliament, former government appointees and current party executives.

He maintained that bringing these groups together would help strengthen internal unity and improve coordination across the region.

The aspirant also pledged to work closely with Members of Parliament and government appointees to advocate for development projects and opportunities for the Upper East Region.

He urged delegates to consider competence, service and loyalty when electing the next Regional Secretary, describing these principles as central to his campaign.

Mr Ayamdor, who declared his intention to contest the position on September 21, 2026, following consultations with party stakeholders, commended the party’s leadership for what he described as a smooth vetting process.

He also wished aspirants in the upcoming constituency executive elections well and indicated that he would begin constituency tours after the elections scheduled for October 24, 2026.

He said the engagements would provide an opportunity to interact with party members, understand their concerns and outline his plans for strengthening the NDC’s structures across the region.
