Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has defended the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) development record in the Bongo District, citing improvements in educational infrastructure and planned road projects as evidence of progress.
He has consequently urged residents to give the government more time to implement its development agenda, rejecting suggestions that the district has been neglected.
Speaking to Bolga FM reporter Moses Anaba Azubire during the NDC constituency elections in Bongo, Mr Atanga, who is also the party’s Upper East Regional Secretary, said the district had witnessed significant improvements in access to education over the years.
He recalled that Bongo had no secondary school when he was preparing to enter secondary education, but several communities now have schools providing educational opportunities to young people.
He mentioned Zokor, Gowrie, Bongo Central, Namoo, Soe, Beo and Balungu as communities benefiting from the expansion of educational infrastructure.
According to him, the establishment of these schools has not only improved access to education but also created employment opportunities for teachers, accountants, nurses, cleaners and other workers.
He argued that the institutions have also provided opportunities for qualified residents to return to the district to work and contribute to its development.
Beyond education, Mr Atanga identified road infrastructure as another area where the government intends to make significant investments.
He recalled that residents previously depended largely on the main Bolgatanga-Bongo road, but additional routes have since improved access to some communities.
He cited a road connecting the area around the former Coordinating Director’s residence to Adaboya and another linking the mission area through Kuyeligo.
The Regional Minister also disclosed that a road project stretching from the Yorogo Chief’s Palace through Bongo, Soe, Feo and Boko to Namoo had been awarded on contract, with construction expected to begin soon.
He further referred to an announcement by the Minister for Roads and Highways concerning plans to tar the road from the Bongo Police Station to Namoo.
According to him, additional road works are also planned for Nayirega and surrounding communities.
Mr Atanga maintained that these interventions, when implemented, would improve transportation, facilitate economic activities and enhance access to essential services.
He urged residents to assess the government’s performance in the context of the time available to implement its development commitments.
The Regional Minister appealed for patience, arguing that the NDC needed sufficient time to execute its planned projects and address longstanding infrastructure challenges in the district.
He also pointed to the constituency’s history of supporting the NDC, noting that the party had consistently won the Bongo parliamentary seat since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
Mr Atanga maintained that the expansion of educational facilities and proposed road improvements demonstrated the party’s commitment to the district’s development.
He expressed confidence that the implementation of the planned projects would bring further improvements to communities across Bongo.
