Give the President’s appointees six months before you criticise – Amoako Baah

A Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and technology, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has asked Ghanaians to be patient with the President, Nana Akufo-Addo because all decisions he takes are intended for the best of the country.

Yesterday, the President announced and presented names of his Deputy Ministers to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for approval after vetting. The number of Deputy Minister skyrocketed the number of his Ministers to a record figure of 110; the highest since the inception of the fourth republic.

The number of Ministers sparked several debates on social media and other platforms with a section of the country arguing that the President does not intend protecting the public purse considering the number of ministers he has appointed only in his first year in government.

But speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East, the lecturer indicated that it was early days yet to criticize the Akufo-Addo administration.

According to him, Ghanaians voted for change and if the needed change should be achieved, things need to be done differently than it was done previously.

He indicated that “let’s give the new government at least six months and when they are not giving us the results we need, then we can start complaining”.

“You voted for change and in order for the change to come things need to be done differently. In time past, a smaller size of governments could not achieve much so if the president wants to do something different to get the needed results, he is at liberty to do that in the interest of Ghanaians. We cannot continue with our old ways of doing things and expect new results.”

When asked if the number of ministers will not affect the public purse, the lecturer mentioned that Democracy is expensive and since we have chosen to practice it, it is best the country practices it to the latter in order to achieve great results.

He added that the country will, however, not be seriously affected because most of the ministers appointed are Members of Parliament and will therefore not take double salaries but will just enjoy some benefits.
