As part of measures to enable every district to have at least one significant and commercially viable export product, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) is implementing a program that will increase country’s export sector significantly.

The project dubbed ‘one district-one export product’ gears towards identifying a priority product in each district in the country for export. The program when fully implemented will be a key driven to economic growth as well as serving as a vehicle for harnessing the private sector potential.

At a stakeholder’s workshop in Bolgatanga to garner inputs towards identifying a precedent product in districts of the Upper East region, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Akilu Sayibu said the one-district-one-export-product will support government policy of implementing a factory each in each district of the country.

Aside assisting the assemblies to identifying a marketable product, Mr. Akilu added that GEPA will also aid the assemblies in identifying international markets for the export of the product.

“GEPA believes that our perennial forex fluctuations are partly caused by the low volume and value of exports realized annually. Moreover, the government’s flagship program of One-District-One-Factory will complement a stronger export base.”

In order to achieve the target, GEPA is currently going through restructuring process to implement the program while setting up regional offices in Upper East and all other regions.

On his part, Deputy Upper East regional minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo said the GEPA program hopes to support government’s ‘one district, one factory’ policy.

He said: “I strongly think that our gathering today is the strongest indication of the great initiatives of a government with vision and determination to support the private sector to thrive”.
