The women’s wing of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for designating a woman as regional minister. If she is vetted and approved by parliament, Paulina Tangoba Abayage, Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy, will be the first ever female to have been occupied the position of regional minister in the Upper East Region.

A statement signed by Upper East Regional Women’s Organiser of NPP, Georgina Ayamba, and copied to A1 Radio, said the appointment of Ambassador Abayage is “apt for a region where the teeming women folks, both in the rural and urban settings, are yearning for their lives and those of their children and families to be positively transformed through sustainable empowerment policies and initiatives”.

The statement added that Ambassador Abayage’s appointment is a demonstration of President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to the Affirmative Action.

“His Excellency the President could not have made a better choice in demonstrating his commitment to the Affirmative Action by appointing a celebrated gender activist whose worth and capabilities are quite known to many development partners not only in Ghana but also across the globe.” The statement said.

The statement further commended the president for appointing a celebrated gender activist whose “worth and capabilities are quite known to many development partners not only in Ghana but also across the globe.”

The Women’s Organizer on behalf of the NPP women’s wing in the region and women in general reminded the incoming regional minister to use her office to champion the course of women especially poor widows by giving them attention to access government’s pro-poor policies.

While offering their unflinching support to the yet-to-be vetted minister-designate, Mrs. Ayamba on behalf of women in the region congratulated the nominee on her new appointment.

“As the Regional Minister-designate prepares to take over and take up the new task, I wish to assure her of unwavering support from the grassroots of the NPP women’s wing throughout her stay in the highest office of this region.” Mrs. Ayamba assures.

If given the nod by parliament,  Ambassador Abayage will take over from Rockson Ayine Bukari, who has been designated as a minister of State at the Office of the President.
