President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has thrown a jab at his political opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that dreams of the party’s chances of winning the 2020 elections cannot be achieved because of the monumental policies and infrastructure implemented by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) led government.
According to him Ghanaians will not entrust the country’s resources into the hands of the NDC because of its quest to scrap the ‘Free Senior High School’ policy.
“I know that there are people in this country who don’t want this policy, who have been campaigning against this policy. They are dreaming that they are going to come back to power to cancel the policy”.
He said this when he addressed students and staff of Bolgatanga Senior High School (Big Boss) as part of his two-day working visit to the Upper East Region.
The president further stated that Ghanaians have lost trust with the NDC, a party which he said had dreamt of winning the 2020 elections but the dream was quashed by descending citizens of the country.
“I want them to know that, they are not coming back to power, and the Free Senior High School policy has come to stay. They still haven’t woken up from their dreams. They dreamt in 2016 that they were on course for victory. They did not know that the Ghanaian people were no longer interested in entrusting them with power. They still haven’t woken up from their dreams”.
He indicated that the introduction of the free SHS policy which has come to stay has increased the enrollment level of students into second circle institutions of about 50 percent.
The reason he entreated SHS 3 students who would be sitting for this year’s WASSCE to excel in the exams in order to shame critics of the policy.
“I am confident that, the results of those exams next year are going to show that this policy is a good policy for our development. The policy is in your hands and you can demonstrate the quality of the education that you have received by the quality of the results of next year’s exams. I have confidence that the result will be positive and everyone will say, yes, it was a good idea to go down this road”.
Headmaster of the school, Afelibiek Ababu requested for infrastructure to lessen congestion faced by the school due to the growing population. He also appealed for a bus to meet the transportation demand of the school.
In his response, President Akufo-Addo assured the school of a bus saying “the bus is the concern of Mr. President and that is my personal commitment. Big Boss, very soon, you will get a new bus”.
He said award of contract for some pressing demands such as a dormitory block and classroom will kick start in the next two weeks.
