A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Michael Aganka, says known members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be paying Gh¢15 or more per litre for fuel if he were President of Ghana.

His comments follow the government’s announcement of a temporary intervention to absorb Gh¢2.00 per litre on diesel and Gh¢0.36 per litre on petrol, effective April 16, 2026. The measure is intended to shield Ghanaians from the full impact of rising global crude oil prices triggered by the ongoing Israel-US conflict involving Iran.

Speaking on the intervention, Mr. Aganka, who is seeking to become the NDC Bolgatanga Central Constituency Communications Officer, argued that NPP members should not benefit from the current price reduction. He referenced the previous NPP administration, stating that Ghanaians endured hardship, including fuel prices that rose to about Gh¢22 per litre, without any relief.

“President Mahama is a listening leader and a man who cares for Ghanaians. That is why he ordered a reduction in fuel prices for ordinary people, unlike the NPP government, even when prices went as high as Gh¢22 per litre,” Mr. Aganka said.

Mr. Aganka added, “So if I were President, all known NPP members would be buying fuel for Gh¢15 or more per litre at the pump, so that ordinary Ghanaians who were not part of the NPP and went through hardship can benefit from this intervention.”

The government’s fuel price intervention took effect on April 16 as global crude prices continue to fluctuate amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
