Women in Sherigu, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region have welcomed a private investor who is set to invest in shea butter processing.
The women who could not hide their excitement said the initiative when completed will not only help them financially, but it will project the community to the international communities.
The investor, Olowo N’djo Tchala of Alaffia Company, on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, cut the sod for the construction of Alaffia Shea Nut Processing Factory in the community.
The factory, according to the Chief Executive Officer, Olowo N’djo Tchala is aimed at using local initiatives to improve the livelihood of the local people.
He said: “The aim is to provide a conducive working environment for the marginalized people in society to earn income. And with this initiative, we seek to use local raw materials, transform them into money and bring them back to the community. This factory if complete in five months, though the beginning will be hard, will help our mothers who do not have work and they will earn something at the end of the day.”
He added that the company will live up to its corporate social responsibilities and will invest evenly in the development of the community in which it operates.
The Project Engineer, Jeremiah Azongo also added that the initiative has come at a time that will help make good use of the shea nut which usually goes to waste.
Adding that it will help women who want to do extra work, do make extra income that can take care of their families.
Chief of the area, Naba Aluman Apasinaba II, however, called on the investor to make use of the land to bring the needed development for the community.
He urged that the company should consider engaging the services of local artisans to partake in the construction process as that will help develop their sense of ownership, and they can contribute their quota to its growth.
Construction of the factory is expected to start in two weeks’ time and the actual processing of shea nut into butter will commence in July this year.
