Amoah Silas Mathew, a businessman and native of the Zuarungu community in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region has rubbished claims against him as someone who is into internet fraud popularly called ‘Sakawa’. The young man said the claims have no basis in truth and should not be taken seriously.
Amoah, who is a successful businessman and philanthropist, believes that his opponents are using this false accusation to tarnish his reputation and hinder his political aspirations. According to Amoah, he has never been involved in any illegal activities such as internet fraud. He asserts that his wealth and success are a result of hard work, dedication, and smart business decisions.
He stated that those spreading these rumours are threatened by his rising popularity in the constituency and want to undermine his credibility.
“My ears are on the ground. When someone wants to discredit you, most of our politicians do a lot of name-calling because we do things they cannot do. We help so much that they think it is not possible for somebody to help, [and] they find tags to it”
The businessman before he picked up nomination forms to contest the New Patriotic Party in the Bolgatanga East constituency was seen in all spheres of the area drilling boreholes and donating furniture, computers, and books to schools and students. He has also organised and sponsored extra classes for all BECE candidates, donated items to improve health delivery in the area, and supported party members with motorbikes and bicycles.
It is against this backdrop that many observers are raising eyebrows as to how a young man who is in his early 30s could acquire such wealth. Among the many people who could not fathom the source of wealth of the NPP stalwart is the Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga East, Dr. Dominic Ayine Akuretinga.
Dr. Ayine who was speaking to the media in March this year after submitting forms to contest the NDC parliamentary primaries did not only question the source of wealth of the staunch member of the NPP, he admonished him to spend his wealth wisely.
“Tell Amoah Mathew, my good brother that wherever he has gotten his money from, he should spend it wisely because I am going to retain the seat”, he stated.
But responding to the allegations after successfully returning nomination forms to contest the NPP parliamentary primaries, Mr. Amoah said he is a businessman and anybody who still doubts his source of wealth may cross-check at the Registrar General Department.
“I said it yesterday, I do business and the records are at the Registrar General, GRA, SSNIT. I am not just greedy, I just want to see people grow but they see the space at which we are going, if they don’t find something to attach to our name, but thank God the people are smart. Even if it is Sakawa, they will eat and change”
When journalists pushed further for an explanation of the exact business the politician is engaged in, Mr. Amoah said just like any businessman who would not want to disclose the source of their business on media platforms, interested people can do a fact check on what he does for a living.
“His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, apart from being the president, does he have any business? Definitely, yes, do you know? The Vice President of our republic, apart from him being the vice president, has businesses. Do you know? Our MPs, apart from them being Members of Parliament, don’t they have any businesses? Do they come on the media?”
Speaking to Joshua Asaah on A1 Radio ahead of the submission of his forms, Mr. Amoah emphasised that he is focused on his political ambitions and is determined to serve the people with honesty and integrity. He refuses to let baseless accusations deter him from his mission to bring positive change to Bolgatanga East constituency.
