The Upper East Regional Head of Girl Child Education at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Rita Abaama, has called on parents to take a more active and holistic role in the upbringing of their children, especially girls.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Madam Abaama emphasized that parenting goes beyond providing food and clothing. She highlighted the importance of open and regular communication between parents and their children.
“As a parent, it is very important to pay attention to your ward. It’s not just food and clothing you’re supposed to provide—you are also expected to constantly have conversations with your children and advise them on what’s right and what’s wrong,” she said.
Madam Abaama further warned against putting undue pressure on girls to seek financial support from men. She explained that when parents are able to meet their children’s basic needs—such as pens, books, and mathematical sets—they earn the moral authority to guide them.
“If you provide for your child’s basic needs, when that child wants to do something wrong and you caution them, they will listen. But if you’re not able to provide, it will be difficult to have control,” she added.
Her comments come amid growing concerns over teenage pregnancy and school dropout rates in the region, particularly among girls. She is urging parents to be proactive partners in both the education and moral development of their children.
