The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bolgatanga East, Jacob Abugre Aka-Ere, has raised concerns about the poor state of dams in the district, calling for urgent government support to improve water availability for both farmers and livestock.
Speaking on Tinmaalgo Sanga on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Aka-Ere noted that although the district is fortunate to have several dams, many of them—particularly the Agric Dam—are either damaged or heavily silted, reducing their capacity to store water.
“We have quite a number of dams in Bolga East, but some need serious expansion and dredging,” he explained. “The Agric Dam, for instance, no longer holds enough water to support dry-season farming. Even our animals are forced to travel long distances just to find water.”
The DCE said plans are well advanced at the district level to address the water crisis, but he stressed that government assistance is critical to making meaningful progress.
“We are working on solutions, but we need support. I’m appealing to the central government to provide us with earth-moving equipment like bulldozers to help dredge the dams,” he said.
Mr. Aka-Ere added that enhancing the dams’ capacities would not only support agriculture but also improve the livelihoods of residents who depend heavily on livestock and farming throughout the year.
The appeal comes as the Upper East Region continues to battle water scarcity, especially during the dry season—a challenge that poses a serious threat to food security and rural livelihoods.
