A severe water crisis has hit Sirigu Integrated Senior High School in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, leading to a class boycott by students. The school’s reliance on a community borehole has been disrupted due to restricted access, making it difficult for students to get water.
The students claim that the water shortage has significantly affected their academic performance and daily routines. Without sufficient water, they are forced to spend long hours searching for it, resulting in lateness, absenteeism, and truancy.
In a dramatic turn of events, the students reportedly chased out the Headmaster and locked his office on Tuesday morning, accusing him of neglect and mismanagement. According to Simon Peter Aberiga, Assembly Member for the Gunwogo Electoral Area, the students believe the Headmaster’s failure to act on the water issue has made him unfit to lead the school.
“So when I got there, the students were unhappy about the water situation in the school. They said the Headmaster, who is supposed to be their father, has disowned them. That is why the community has denied them access to the water, so they don’t want him,” he explained.
The students are calling for urgent intervention to resolve the crisis, which they say is crucial for their academic progress and overall well-being. The situation underscores the urgent need for a sustainable solution to the school’s water challenges.
Simon Peter Aberiga confirmed the incident, stating that the students’ actions stemmed from deep frustration over the ongoing crisis and the perceived inaction of the school’s leadership. Efforts to speak to the Headmaster or any other senior member of the school’s administration have so far been unsuccessful.
