Namoalug chief clarifies stance on paramount chieftaincy title

The Chief of Namoalug in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, Naab Kolsong, has emphasized the importance of adhering to traditional processes in matters of chieftaincy.

Speaking exclusively to A1 Radio, the chief clarified that he cannot assume the title of paramount chief until the proper procedures are duly followed and authority formally conferred upon him.

According to Namoanaab, leadership titles are earned and bestowed, not self-declared. “No, it is improper to call somebody a paramount chief. Positions are earned. You don’t just get up and say, I’m this. Somebody must make you one,” he emphasized.

Drawing an analogy, he explained that just as individuals are named by others through recognition and ceremony, traditional leaders must be affirmed by authority. “Why would I do that? I go somewhere, and they say, look at the paramount chief of this place, whereas you are not. Is it not a disgrace to yourself?” he asked.

Namoanaab stressed that he would only accept such a title when it is properly given through the right cultural and traditional channels. “When it is due, you will be given. And then you can be rightly called a paramount chief,” he concluded.

His comments counter the general perception among locals and some youth who often refer to him as a paramount chief.

Beyond chieftaincy matters, the Namoalug Chief also made a passionate appeal for collective planning and collaboration to ensure Talensi District benefits fully from its abundant resources, particularly from mining companies operating in the area.

“We need to have a strategy that can help us get the needed development from these mining companies. We need to sit down with the district administration, draw a plan, a very elaborate plan,” he proposed. He suggested involving experts to design and vet a long-term framework that prioritizes infrastructure, education, health, and other social needs.

Namoanaab emphasized that the district’s two major mining companies provide a rare opportunity to transform the area if resources are channeled properly.

“It must be a conscious and deliberate plan. Look, now that we have two giant companies, we can sit down, focus and draw a very good plan,” he explained.

His remarks highlight not only his personal integrity in matters of traditional authority but also his vision for a more coordinated and sustainable path toward development in Talensi.

As the district continues to grapple with the challenges of resource management and equitable development, his call for unity and foresight resonates strongly with the community’s aspirations.
