Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, founder of the Butt-tis Buuri Scholarship Fund, has shed light on the financial foundation and long-term sustainability of his initiative, which is dedicated to empowering marginalized youth in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

In an interview with A1 Radio, Dr. Krugu disclosed that the fund was initially financed through his personal earnings from online lecturing and supervising PhD and master’s students. He admitted, however, that this approach was limited.

“A fund that depends solely on an individual’s effort is not sustainable, and it is also not enough to meet the need. The demand is huge,” he said.

With annual requests for support from brilliant but underprivileged students growing, the fund is now actively working to broaden community involvement to secure its future. Dr. Krugu outlined a multi-pronged strategy being advanced by the fund’s newly inaugurated board.

He pointed to women’s groups as an early bright spot. “The responsibility of taking care of children in school often falls on women,” he noted, adding that mothers of beneficiaries have already started internal discussions on making collective contributions to the fund.

The initiative is also gaining traction with the diaspora. Natives of the district living abroad have contacted Dr. Krugu, pledging to mobilize resources for what they describe as “one of the most important things to happen in the district.” Traditional leaders have also expressed a willingness to contribute in any way they can.

To strengthen ownership, the fund has introduced a “Wall of Greatness” at its office. Every contributor, regardless of the amount, will be permanently recognized — a gesture designed to build a legacy and inspire future beneficiaries by showing them the community of supporters behind their education.

Dr. Krugu voiced confidence in the board’s inclusive approach, stressing that these strategies will help create a strong, sustainable scholarship scheme that continues to transform lives in Bawku West.
