Leading members of BONABOTO, a social group committed to the development of the Upper East Region, have expressed deep disappointment over what they describe as a poor maintenance culture at the Upper East Regional Hospital.
Speaking during the donation of two automatic blood pressure monitors to the hospital by BONABOTO-UK, the Upper East Regional Chairman, Dr. Esmond Agurgo Balfour, lamented the facility’s failure to maintain essential medical equipment, including incubators previously donated by the group.
“It is sad and heartbreaking to understand that when these equipment are provided, you cannot maintain them,” Dr. Balfour said.
He stressed that the hospital’s inability to repair broken equipment due to a lack of funds or replacement parts was unacceptable. “We expect this attitude to change. Otherwise, maybe we will find some other institution that is serious with maintenance and provide for them,” he warned. Dr. Balfour urged the hospital’s biomedical officer to identify the necessary parts and communicate with BONABOTO, expressing hope that the group could offer further assistance.
The two automatic blood pressure monitors, valued at £3,183, were donated to support the hospital in delivering quality healthcare services.
Another BONOBOTO member, Nyeya Yin, also emphasized the importance of maintaining donated equipment. “Even if it’s a pound people contribute, it’s a lot. The people who fall down to the UK, USA and all those countries really work very hard,” he said.
He noted that members abroad make significant sacrifices to contribute to the group’s projects and expressed disappointment that the hospital did not inform BONABOTO about the malfunctioning incubators, which reportedly stopped working due to missing parts.
“We take good care of the equipment,” he added, suggesting that the hospital could have reached out for assistance with repairs.
