The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, Joseph Abaa Akaseke, has expressed concern over the rising number of motorbike thefts in the district, citing poor lighting as a key factor enabling late-night crimes.

He spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show following the shooting of a young man whose motorbike was stolen by armed robbers.

To enhance security, the Bongo District Assembly, all things being equal, will begin installing streetlights in critical areas where crime has been on the rise, Mr. Akaseke said. Additionally, there will be increased night police patrols. He urged residents to take extra precautions, including avoiding riding through communities late at night, as the District Security Council (DISEC) works to address the surge in motorbike thefts and armed robberies.

Mr. Akaseke noted that his office has received multiple reports of motorbike snatching, highlighting the urgency of the situation. “You know this is a festive season, and during this time young men often go out late at night. We have heard of several cases of motorbike snatching in the Bongo area, and it is unfortunate that yesterday we recorded yet another incident. We will arrange a DISEC meeting within the week to assess the situation and work with the police to enhance patrolling and ensure peace in the district,” he said.

The remarks followed the shooting of a man believed to be in his 30s in Zorko-Gamboringo, a community within the Bongo area. Residents and the DCE reported that the victim was attacked sometime after dawn, struggled with the assailants, and was shot. While his motorbike was missing from the scene, the keys were recovered.

Mr. Akaseke confirmed that the police recovered the body, sent it to Bongo District Hospital, and later released it to the family for burial.
