The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended its position on possible disciplinary action against Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng following his description of the party as “fake,” a comment that has generated strong reactions within political circles.
Speaking on A1 Radio, the Upper East Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Peter Ayinbisa, stated that although Prof. Frimpong-Boateng is a long-serving member who played a role in the party’s growth, such remarks are unacceptable and damaging to the party’s unity and image. He stressed that the NPP would not allow members to make statements that undermine its success and cohesion, especially at a critical time for the party.
“If we have party people who speak carelessly, who speak without thinking; if we have party people who just open their mouths and say anything, whether it’s detrimental to the growth and success of the party or not, we will not sit down as a party and allow such people to destroy our party,” he said.
According to him, the NPP has a track record of taking firm internal decisions when the need arises, recalling past instances where disciplinary actions were taken against top party officials in the interest of unity and electoral victory. He indicated that the party would not hesitate to take similar steps again if it believes doing so would strengthen internal cohesion.
“In 2016, when the need arose to suspend the national chairman and the general secretary, we did—and we won elections. So if we have to suspend Professor Frimpong-Boateng to have a unified and united party, we will not hesitate to do that,” he stressed.
Mr. Ayinbisa also rejected comments from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on how the NPP should handle the matter, insisting that internal party issues remain the sole responsibility of the NPP.
He further attributed Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments to dissatisfaction over not receiving a second-round appointment after the party’s victory under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, arguing that this disappointment had influenced his posture toward the party’s leadership.
“I can say without a shadow of doubt that Professor Frimpong-Boateng is simply angry because he didn’t get a second-round appointment. I can say that. I can say it without fear,” he said.
“How can you describe a party that you belong to, that you suffered to build, that you suffered to get into power, as fake? Fake? Then he is fake,” Mr. Ayinbisa added.
The NPP communicator maintained that the party remains authentic in its values, objectives, and membership, and urged anyone who no longer believes in its ideals to disassociate peacefully rather than publicly discredit the organization.
“The party is not fake. We, those in the NPP, we are not fake. The objective of the party is not fake. So let somebody who thinks the party is fake go and belong to his virtual party,” he said.
He described the former minister’s comments as reckless and irresponsible, emphasizing that party loyalty should include protecting its reputation rather than weakening it in public discourse.
