The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, has praised the party’s January 31 presidential primary, describing it as a peaceful and successful exercise that should serve as a model for political processes in Ghana.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show, Ayamga said the party conducted the primary with clarity and discipline, despite predictions from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the exercise would be marred by disorder.

“Everybody thought that the NPP would not have a successful election and that there would be a second round of ‘showdown’. They were predicting doom for us. They didn’t wish us well,” he said.

The primary saw Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia re-elected as the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2028 elections. Ayamga noted that all five aspirants understood from the start that only one could emerge and that the process would be decisive.

“Nothing untoward happened. No single report across the country of intimidation, fighting, or ballot stuffing. It was generally peaceful and largely successful,” he said.

The NPP official also emphasized the party’s role as a “pacesetter” in Ghanaian politics, highlighting that the NDC often follows the initiatives first set by the NPP. “We have always set the pace for them to follow. When they ask for amendments, we are the first to do it. Anything in this political space, the NPP is always the first to start something, then they come to follow,” he said.

Ayamga said the party’s meticulous organization — including managing 275 voting centers without incident — reflects its commitment to democratic practice. He urged the opposition to learn from the example, praising the primary as “genuine elections” where the candidate who won did so according to the will of the people.

He added that party members and supporters would now unite behind Bawumia to prepare for the 2028 general elections.

“Once he won based on the will of the people, he is the one we are all going to rally behind to ensure we present him to the good people of Ghana once again,” Ayamga said.
