The Ghana Tourism Authority in the Upper East Region, on February 14, marked the 21st National Chocolate Day with inmates at the Navrongo Central Prison yard in the Upper East Region. The event, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority on the theme “Eat Chocolate, Stay Healthy, Grow Ghana,” brought together traditional authorities, security agencies, heads of departments and members of the media.
Deputy Upper East Regional Director of GTA, Joseph Azika, in a statement on behalf of the Regional Director, Joseph Apeyeje, explained that although February 14 is globally recognized as Valentine’s Day, Ghana has officially designated the day as National Chocolate Day under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.
“To safeguard our socio-cultural environment and promote national development, the Ghana Tourism Authority christened the day as Chocolate Day”.
He added that the initiative aligns with government’s tourism policy direction, particularly the Black Star Experience, which seeks to showcase Ghana’s identity and heritage.
“As Ghanaians, cocoa is part of us and is globally celebrated. Since chocolate symbolizes love, affection and friendship, we are here to express our solidarity and share the cocoa love with our brothers here,” he emphasized.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Prisons Commander, whose remarks were delivered by the Municipal Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Alhassan Yankpani, commended the Authority for bringing the celebration into the correctional facility.
The Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area, Pe Denis Aniakwo Balinia Adda Asagipaare II, uses the opportunity to call for justice, compassion and renewed hope for inmates at the Navrongo Central Prison.
The Paramount Chief prayed that inmates at the Navrongo prison with pending cases would receive timely justice and that those unable to pay fines would find benefactors to support their release.
