BTU management rejects allegations against Governing Council Chairman

Management of Bolgatanga Technical University has dismissed allegations made against the Chairman of its Governing Council, Dr. Bishop Akolgo, describing them as false and misleading.

In a press statement, the university said it had reviewed a petition circulated by a group identifying themselves as “concerned staff” and found the claims to be without merit.

According to management, the petition questioned Dr. Akolgo’s qualifications and accused him of unilateral decision-making, issues the university insists are not supported by facts.
The statement explained that Dr. Akolgo possesses the academic qualifications and professional experience required under the Technical Universities Act, adding that he has more than three decades of experience in research, economic policy analysis, development work, and civil society leadership.

Management said these credentials make him well suited to lead the university’s governing council at this stage of its development.

Management also rejected claims that major decisions taken by the council were personal actions of the chairman. It clarified that all decisions since the council’s inauguration in July 2025 were taken collectively during properly convened meetings and communicated through official channels to the university community.

The university cited two decisions that it said had been misrepresented in the petition. The first relates to a directive for the Vice-Chancellor, Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, to proceed on annual leave earlier this year. According to management, that decision was taken by the full governing council during a meeting and was not a unilateral move by the chairman.

The second issue concerns the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor pending investigations into alleged procurement breaches involving more than 27 million Ghana cedis from a GETFund grant. Management said the suspension was unanimously approved by the council during an emergency meeting and formed part of the council’s responsibility to ensure public financial accountability.

On accusations of administrative overreach, the statement maintained that the chairman has not interfered with the day-to-day management of the university. Management explained that the only meeting held between the chairman and some academic leaders last year was approved by the council and organized with the involvement of the Vice-Chancellor.

While acknowledging the right of staff to raise concerns, the university urged employees to use established internal grievance procedures rather than public campaigns based on unverified claims. It warned that false and defamatory statements could have legal consequences under Ghanaian law and the university’s statutes.

Management reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the council chairman and called on staff, students, partners and the general public to disregard the allegations circulating in the media and on other platforms.

The university added that it remains committed to transparency, accountability and good governance as investigations into the procurement allegations continue.
