360 Montessori School in the Bolgatanga East District has held a school-wide election, giving students hands-on experience in democratic governance and leadership.

The election, supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, saw students contesting positions including President, Sports Minister and Members of Parliament, among others.

The initiative forms part of the school’s approach to teaching democracy by fostering leadership skills, civic responsibility and ethical conduct. By mirroring national democratic standards, the school aims to nurture future leaders who understand due process, fairness and national pride.

The Director of the school, Emmanuel Azabirega, said the exercise is designed to equip learners with practical knowledge of electoral processes and prepare them for responsible citizenship.

“We do not merely teach children what democracy is; we allow them to practice it,” he said.

A total of 133 registered voters participated in the exercise, alongside 10 ministerial candidates, 17 parliamentary candidates and one presidential aspirant.

Luciana Tamaga emerged as President-elect for the 2026/2027 academic year, pledging to deliver on her promises and promote student interests.

Other students elected into ministerial positions include Christabel Azure Adelyine as Minister of Entertainment; Mohammed Mariam as Minister of Environment and Sanitation; Esther Akolbila Abanyine as Minister of Health; Nana Spencer Tewaiah as Minister of Sports; Nathaniel Mbawini Awinititi as Minister of Defense; and Acacia Wooma Malteti as Minister of Education.

The Members of Parliament-elect are Oswald Ayingurah Ayinlebna (Gazania Class), Jayna Wunborgnan Mabe (Poppy Class), Melvin Akolgo (Sunrose Class), Godeleine Bugre (Flamboyant Class), Claudia Atosona (Acacia Class), and Sergius Y. Bognaab (Lily of the Valley Class).

Mr. Azabirega explained that the school designates school prefects as Ministers and class prefects as Members of Parliament to help students understand how a nation is governed — from the constituency level to the presidency. The senior prefect is referred to as the President, reflecting the country’s leadership structure and allowing students to view the school as a miniature nation.
