A kologo musician from Bolgatanga, BB Batongo, has called on government and stakeholders to provide stronger support for local and traditional musicians in the Upper East Region.

Speaking in an interview on Bolga FM’s Buuri Malema Sanga, BB Batongo urged authorities to offer financial assistance and recognition to local artists, particularly emerging talents in the region.

He argued that traditional musicians deserve the same level of recognition as mainstream Ghanaian artists such as Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, citing their role in promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage on the global stage.

BB Batongo emphasised that traditional musicians are key custodians of Ghana’s musical identity and should be prioritised in national cultural development efforts.

He also called on government to support initiatives such as “music nights” and other cultural events that promote local talent, noting that investment in the creative arts could help reduce unemployment among the youth.

In addition, he raised concerns about the current royalties system, stating that it does not adequately benefit many artists, especially those working within the traditional music space.
