A Public Health Nurse, Mrs. Sussana Atanga, has called on nurses and other health professionals to give patients their full attention during consultations by maintaining eye contact, offering emotional support, and reducing the use of mobile phones while on duty.
Speaking during a health sector engagement, Mrs. Atanga stressed that effective communication between health workers and patients is essential to delivering quality healthcare.
She said patients feel more respected, valued, and confident when healthcare providers pay attention to them and actively listen to their concerns.
According to her, nurses should maintain eye contact with patients during consultations, show empathy, and provide the necessary support throughout their visits to health facilities.
Mrs. Atanga expressed concern about the excessive use of mobile phones by some health workers while attending to patients, noting that the practice can distract healthcare providers, reduce the quality of care, and negatively affect the patient experience.
She urged health personnel to minimise the use of mobile phones during working hours, except when they are needed for official duties or emergency situations.
Mrs. Atanga emphasised that professionalism, compassion, and effective communication are essential to delivering quality healthcare and building trust between health workers and the communities they serve.
She encouraged nurses and other healthcare professionals to remain focused on patient care and uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism, ensuring that every patient receives respectful, attentive, and compassionate care.
