President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a five-member committee to oversee the implementation of the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund, formally setting in motion government efforts to rebuild infrastructure and revive economic activity in Bawku and surrounding areas.
President Mahama said the GH¢1 billion allocation has been made available, clearing the way for implementation as the security situation in Bawku continues to improve.
The committee, inaugurated at the Presidency on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, is chaired by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
Other members are Bawku Central Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga; the Chief of Tempane, Naba Abugri Cletus Akolwin; Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga; and Garu Member of Parliament Dr Thomas Winsum Anabah.
President Mahama said the improved security situation provides an opportunity for government to return to Bawku with development interventions after years of conflict disrupted public services, economic activity and infrastructure projects.
He said the government had previously been unable to post National Service personnel and medical personnel to the area because of the insecurity.
The President also cited the Tamne Irrigation Dam as one of the major projects affected by the conflict. Work on the project stalled after an employee of the contractor was killed, forcing the company to withdraw from the area.
The dam is expected to benefit four districts in the Bawku area.
President Mahama said the relative calm now provides an opportunity for work on stalled development projects to resume and for Bawku and surrounding communities to receive their fair share of national development.
The Revitalisation Fund followed the government’s receipt of the report of the Otumfuo Mediation Committee on December 16, 2025.
President Mahama said security services had since remained firm in the area, contributing to improvements in safety and security.
He said the GH¢1 billion fund would support infrastructure and other interventions considered necessary for the recovery of Bawku and surrounding districts.
The President said the broader objective is to help Bawku recover from the effects of the prolonged conflict and restore its position as a major commercial centre.
The five-member committee will oversee the use of the fund and determine priority interventions for Bawku and neighbouring districts.
President Mahama expressed confidence in the committee and tasked its members with ensuring that the resources are managed with integrity and directed towards interventions that benefit communities across the Bawku area.
