The Upper East Region continues to grapple with a high incidence of road accidents, with motorcycles and tricycles identified as the major contributors to these unfortunate events. Eric Anokye Fordjuor, the Head of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) in the Upper East Region, has raised concerns about the increasing number of accidents involving these two- and three-wheeled vehicles.
According to Mr. Fordjuor, motorcycles and tricycles are widely used for transportation across the region due to their affordability and ability to navigate difficult terrains. However, their prevalence has also led to a surge in road crashes, often resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. The RSA has observed that many of these accidents are caused by reckless riding, overloading, poor adherence to traffic regulations, and the lack of proper safety gear such as helmets.
The Road Safety Authority is intensifying its efforts to curb this trend by launching awareness campaigns aimed at educating riders and passengers on safe road use practices. Enforcement of traffic laws is also being strengthened, with increased patrols and checkpoints to ensure compliance. Mr. Fordjuor emphasized the importance of community involvement and cooperation with law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of accidents.
He further urged riders to prioritize safety by wearing helmets, avoiding overloading, and respecting speed limits. Passengers were also encouraged to demand safe riding practices from operators. The RSA is collaborating with local authorities, transport unions, and civil society groups to develop sustainable solutions that will enhance road safety in the region.
The growing concern over motorcycle- and tricycle-related accidents highlights the urgent need for comprehensive road safety strategies tailored to the unique challenges of the Upper East Region. Through combined efforts, it is hoped that the number of road accidents can be significantly reduced, saving lives and improving the overall safety of road users.
Mr. Fordjuor made these remarks during the inaugural ceremony of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG), held in Bolgatanga on March 28, 2026. He reiterated that motorcycles and tricycles remain the leading causes of road accidents in the region, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Fordjuor emphasized that while motorcycles and tricycles serve as vital means of transportation for many residents due to their affordability and convenience, their increasing use has contributed to a rise in road crashes.
“They pointed out that reckless riding, overloading, and non-compliance with traffic regulations are major factors behind these accidents,” he said.
“According to him, in our part of the country, tricycles have become an essential part of our transport system. They are among the most common means of transport service in the region,” Mr. Fordjuor stated.
He further indicated that they provide livelihoods for many young people who were previously without meaningful employment.
The Head of the National Road Safety Authority in the Upper East Region concluded by noting that this growing importance comes with increased responsibility.
“For the past five years, motorcycles and tricycles have contributed to the highest number of accidents and deaths in our region,” he emphasized.
