Upper East Regional Minister worried about youth moving from farming to mining

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has raised concerns over the growing shift of young people from agriculture to mining in the region.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with the German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshöft, where discussions focused on development challenges in the region.

The minister warned that the trend could negatively affect food production, as the agricultural sector remains largely non-industrialised and heavily dependent on manual labour.

“You will realise that because our agriculture is not industrialised, it requires many hands to feed the population,” he said. “Now that the youth are moving into mining, it means fewer hands in agriculture, and that will create problems for us.”

He stressed the need for a comprehensive development approach that takes the trend into account, ensuring better integration of the mining sector with other parts of the economy.

According to him, such an approach would help promote sustainable economic growth while safeguarding food production in the region.
