“It is a deceitful position” – Ayinbisa criticises delay on LGBTQ+ Bill

The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisa, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what he describes as delays in handling the LGBTQ+ bill.

His comments come amid growing public debate over the status of the bill and the pace at which it is being handled by the current administration.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayinbisa questioned why the president has not yet acted on the issue, arguing that the administration has been swift in approving other matters since assuming office but appears hesitant in this case.

“After more than a year in office, the things he needed to do with the exercise of power were quickly approved. Why is he delaying this one?” he asked.

He further noted that the NDC holds a majority in Parliament and therefore has the capacity to pass the bill without support from the opposition.

“They have the numbers. They don’t even need the NPP to pass it, so what are they waiting for?” he said.

Mr. Ayinbisa also attributed responsibility for the delay to both the president and NDC Members of Parliament, suggesting that they control the legislative agenda but have not prioritised the bill.

“We should blame all of them, especially the NDC Members of Parliament, because they determine what is discussed during the week, and they have not brought it forward. Why are they delaying?” he said.

He described the situation as a shift from the party’s earlier position while in opposition, alleging that the issue was used as a political tool to gain power.

“For me, this is a change of stance. They deceived us; it is a deceitful government. They used it to win political power, and now they think we are no longer paying attention,” he said.
