Bongo NADMO intensifies community sensitisation to curb disasters

The Bongo District office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says it is prioritising prevention over response, with a renewed focus on community education to reduce disaster risks.

District Director Patrick Anamoo said the office is intensifying outreach and sensitisation efforts to ensure residents understand potential hazards and take precautionary measures before disasters occur.

“We do not wait for disasters to happen before we act. Prevention is our core mandate,” he said on Bolga FM’s Tingmaalgo Sanga programme.

According to him, NADMO’s strategy centres on regular community engagement through workshops, awareness campaigns, and training sessions aimed at improving disaster preparedness and early response.

“This is achieved through active community engagement and sensitisation efforts aimed at educating and preparing the community to reduce disaster risks,” he explained.

Mr. Anamoo said the approach is designed to minimise loss of life and property, particularly among vulnerable communities frequently affected by floods, bushfires, and erratic weather conditions.

He added that focusing on prevention not only reduces the cost of emergency response but also builds resilient communities capable of managing risks effectively.

The Bongo NADMO office believes the strategy could serve as a model for other districts seeking to strengthen disaster preparedness and response systems.
