Residents of Bolgatanga and surrounding communities have been warned against constructing buildings close to water pipelines, as officials of Ghana Water Ltd. intensify efforts to safeguard infrastructure and improve service delivery.
The caution was issued during a sensitisation and customer engagement session held in Bolgatanga under the theme “Building Trust Through Transparency.” The forum brought together officials of the company, community members, customers, and students to discuss ongoing projects, service challenges, and efforts to ensure reliable water supply.
Addressing participants, the Regional Distribution Manager, Ing. Yaw Nimako Amoah, said encroachment on pipeline routes poses serious risks, including structural damage to homes in the event of pipe bursts.
“Anytime there is a burst, it is possible your house will come down,” he cautioned. “Do not build close to pipelines or on them. It is dangerous.”
The session also highlighted plans by the company to expand water access through subsidised household connections. According to Ing. Amoah, about 4,000 new connections are being targeted across various communities as part of efforts to improve accessibility.
“We recognise that water is life, and there is an urgent need to make it more accessible,” he said. “That is why we are rolling out subsidised connections to ensure more households are connected.”
In addition, the company plans to undertake pipeline extension projects, particularly in areas where existing lines are far from residential zones. These interventions are expected to begin in the last quarter of the year.
Ing. Amoah also urged residents to play an active role in maintaining the system by promptly reporting leakages and bursts. Customers were encouraged to use nearby offices and digital platforms to notify the company, with assurances of swift response.
The engagement forms part of a broader strategy by the utility provider to strengthen public confidence, improve accountability, and foster collaboration with consumers.
