A local gospel musician, Michael Mbelimah, together with his group, Mbelimah Music Family, has organized a quiz competition for junior high school (JHS) students in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.
The event, held at Adaboya Junior High School, brought together four schools: Adaboya JHS, Tindomboko JHS, Apatanga JHS, and Banabas Academy.
Organizers said the competition was aimed at supporting students academically, promoting education in the community, and preparing candidates for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). They added that such initiatives help build students’ confidence and expose them to broader opportunities.
The group also called on individuals, district authorities, District Education Committees, and assembly members to invest more in education, describing it as critical to national development.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Mbelimah said the music group was formed in 2021 primarily for entertainment but has since expanded into community service. These include visits to health facilities to support patients, clean-up exercises, and educational initiatives such as quiz competitions.
He said the idea for the quiz programme was inspired by a desire to give back to society after receiving support from fans during music events. Through the initiative, the group provides learning materials such as books, pens, and rulers to participating students.
Mr. Mbelimah added that the competitions have contributed to improved academic performance and increased school enrollment in participating communities.
Quiz master John Adongo said many students demonstrate strong potential but face challenges in subjects such as Mathematics and Science. He encouraged other musicians to support similar initiatives to promote education.
At the end of the competition, Apatanga Junior High School emerged as the winner. All participating schools received educational materials, while the winning school was given additional items, including notebooks.
Students expressed appreciation to the organizers and appealed to the Ghana Education Service, the district assembly, Members of Parliament, and non-governmental organizations for support, particularly in the provision of furniture and learning resources.
The overall best student, Aduko Mathew, answered 12 questions correctly to secure victory for his school and received a pamphlet in recognition of his performance.
