The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has begun a week-long observance to honour fallen firefighters, retired personnel, and serving officers across the country.

The annual event is being held under the theme: “An attack on firefighters and their equipment is an attack on public safety.”

Officials said the observance is aimed at recognising the contributions of personnel who have served the nation, including those who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as those currently serving.

Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tingmaalgo Sanga programme on April 30, DOIII Mary Lewaa outlined activities planned for the week. These include recognition ceremonies for retired personnel, awards for outstanding firefighters, and public education campaigns on fire safety and the role of the service.

She said the theme highlights the need to protect firefighters and their equipment, noting that attacks on emergency responders can undermine public safety and delay response to incidents.

The GNFS has called on the public to support its work and to respect emergency personnel during operations.

At the programme, SO1 Abongo Michael cautioned against prank calls to the service’s emergency lines.

“False alarms prevent genuine victims from receiving timely assistance and waste limited resources,” he said. “They also put lives at risk.”

He urged the public to use emergency lines responsibly. The service reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel and ensuring effective response to emergencies across the country.
