All third-year male students of Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) have been directed to vacate the school premises with immediate effect following security intelligence suggesting planned attacks on critical school infrastructure.
The directive was issued by Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Akamugri Donatus Atanga, during an address to students and faculty on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
He cited recurring unrest and the destruction of school property as reasons for the preemptive action.
“What I have picked among you is that some of you are preparing that hell will break loose tonight on the campus,” the minister said, expressing concern that allowing the situation to escalate could endanger innocent lives.
He noted that riots often spiral out of control and result in unintended casualties.
Mr. Atanga explained that the decision was intended to safeguard both the school community and public property. While acknowledging the disruption the directive could cause to academic activities, he said the students’ conduct had necessitated the intervention.
He also warned that failure to comply with security directives could affect students’ ability to sit for upcoming examinations.
“I don’t take delight in punishing people, but if you have called for it, we have to find a way out,” he added, urging students to cooperate to ensure a swift resolution.
According to the minister, intelligence reports specifically implicated third-year male students in the planned disturbances, making the directive targeted rather than school-wide.
Mr. Atanga said mechanisms had been put in place to identify those responsible for the unrest and assured that the Regional Security Council was working to “fish out” individuals behind the repeated disturbances.
He maintained that the measure was necessary to restore calm and protect the integrity of the institution.
