Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii, Regional Manager of the Catholic Education Unit for the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, has called for the provision of teachers’ accommodation and staff common rooms in schools to enhance effective teaching and learning across the Diocese.

She said the lack of decent accommodation for teachers, particularly in rural communities, continues to affect academic activities and the performance of both teachers and students.

According to her, many teachers travel long distances to school daily due to accommodation challenges, a situation that affects punctuality, lesson preparation, supervision of students, and participation in extracurricular activities.

Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii stressed that providing teachers’ quarters within school environments would enable teachers to stay closer to their workplaces, improve lesson preparation, and contribute more effectively to academic performance.

She also appealed for the construction of staff common rooms in schools to provide teachers with conducive spaces to prepare teaching and learning materials, hold meetings, conduct research, and engage in professional discussions that improve educational outcomes.

She noted that quality education cannot be achieved without a supportive and motivating environment for teachers, adding that educational infrastructure remains key to effective teaching and learning.

Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii therefore appealed to government, NGOs, old students, philanthropists, development partners, religious bodies, and community leaders to support efforts aimed at providing teachers’ accommodation and staff common rooms in schools within the Diocese.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the Catholic Education Unit to improving education standards and ensuring a conducive environment for both teachers and students across the Upper East Region.
