Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii, Regional Manager of the Catholic Education Unit, has called for a review of what she describes as unfavorable government policies affecting the quality of education across the country, warning that mass promotion of students without merit is undermining academic standards.

She expressed concern that the automatic promotion of students, without ensuring they meet required academic benchmarks, is weakening discipline and reducing the seriousness with which students approach learning.

According to her, the practice places additional pressure on teachers, as many students advance to higher classes without mastering foundational concepts, making effective teaching and learning increasingly difficult.

Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii noted that while such policies are intended to improve access and retention in schools, stakeholders must critically assess their long-term impact on academic excellence and student development.

She also highlighted broader challenges facing teachers, including inadequate teaching and learning materials, lack of accommodation, overcrowded classrooms, and insufficient infrastructure, all of which affect effective delivery in schools.

The Regional Manager called on government, education authorities, parents, and other stakeholders to collaborate in reviewing policies that may hinder quality education and the holistic development of students.

She emphasized the need for reforms that promote discipline, hard work, academic excellence, and critical thinking among learners.

Rev. Sr. Bernardine Pemii reaffirmed the commitment of the Catholic Education Unit to supporting quality education and moral formation within schools in the Diocese and beyond.
