Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, spokesperson for the Environment and Natural Resources Sector Committee of the New Patriotic Party, says no Ghanaian should wish for the failure of the governing National Democratic Congress, warning that any failure by the administration would be a disappointment to the country.
Speaking on A1 Radio, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority argued that national development must remain a collective responsibility beyond political party lines.
“No one prays for the NDC to fail in terms of development, but if it does fail the people, then that will be a shame for the NDC and a testament that the NPP always had the country at heart,” he stated.
According to Dr. Krugu, successive governments should build on the achievements of their predecessors rather than undermine them for political advantage.
“The NPP did its part and we expect them to build on it properly so that when the NPP comes back, we continue from there. That is how nations grow. If you just hope that they fail and then you come back, then we don’t go anywhere,” he said.
Dr. Krugu expressed concern about what he described as worrying developments under the current administration, noting that Ghanaians should be deeply concerned if President John Dramani Mahama does not succeed.
“I’ve said it before that all of us should be sad as a country if His Excellency John Mahama fails,” he stressed.
He explained that President Mahama occupies what he described as a “unique position in history,” giving him advantages that previous presidents did not enjoy upon assuming office.
Dr. Krugu pointed out that unlike many first-term presidents who require years to fully understand governance structures, Mahama returned to office with prior experience and deeper institutional knowledge after spending eight years in opposition.
“When you have been president before and you go back into opposition for eight years to reflect on what you did and what you can do better, and then you return, you understand cabinet coordination, national security architecture, the geopolitical landscape, and the diplomatic community. You can start work from day one,” he said.
He further argued that President Mahama’s current tenure presents a rare political advantage because it is constitutionally his final term in office, freeing him from electoral pressures that often shape government decision-making.
“This is a man who doesn’t need our vote again. Normally, governments shape policies around winning another election, but he is in a position to take bold and difficult decisions without fear of political consequences,” Dr. Krugu added.
Another factor, according to him, is the NDC’s overwhelming parliamentary strength, which he believes gives the President extraordinary room to implement policies without significant legislative resistance.
“When you have a super majority in Parliament, that is power in your hands. You can take the hardest decisions and still move forward,” he noted.
Dr. Krugu maintained that because of these exceptional circumstances, President Mahama should be assessed differently from former presidents such as John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“The standard used to measure previous presidents cannot be the same standard used to measure President John Mahama because he is in a unique position in history,” he stated.
His comments come amid ongoing national discussions on governance, economic recovery, and expectations surrounding the current administration’s development agenda.
