Beyond power: Why President Mahama’s legacy and a formidable NDC must come first

President John Dramani Mahama’s performance in office has been remarkable, and it is understandable why many Ghanaians would wish for him to continue beyond his current constitutional term. His leadership, experience, and renewed commitment to national development have inspired confidence among many.

However, the greater and lasting interest of the NDC and Ghana must always rise above individual ambitions and personal preferences.

President Mahama has previously made his position clear on this matter, and that position deserves to be respected and supported. Rather than encouraging actions that could place unnecessary pressure on him or create circumstances that may undermine his hard-earned reputation, Ghanaians and party supporters should encourage him to remain committed to the principles he has already expressed.

Although some individuals within the NDC have not openly declared their intention to succeed President Mahama, their actions, engagements, and political activities have clearly suggested an interest in the party’s future leadership.

In such circumstances, any attempt to pursue a third term could create avoidable tensions and divisions within the party. Such divisions could affect not only the President’s remaining years in office but also his effectiveness should he accept another term.

Those who may have been preparing themselves for the opportunity to lead the party could feel sidelined or discouraged, making it more difficult to achieve the unity, commitment, and collective effort required for successful governance.

Ultimately, this could weaken party cohesion, affect public confidence in the NDC, and create conditions that may push the party back into opposition.

For this reason, the most prudent and statesmanlike decision would be for President Mahama to maintain his earlier position and reject any attempt to extend his tenure, irrespective of the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the relevant constitutional provisions.

If a different constitutional understanding emerges, it should serve as a guide for future presidents and not become a pathway for extending President Mahama’s stay in office.

President Mahama has a historic opportunity to leave behind a legacy defined not only by his achievements in government but also by his respect for democratic values and constitutional principles. He should leave office with his integrity preserved, his conscience clear, and his name remembered as a leader who placed the stability of Ghana and the strength of the NDC above personal continuation in power.

The responsibility of the NDC now is to protect its unity, consolidate the gains of good governance, and continue implementing policies that improve the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians. Through visionary leadership, discipline, inclusiveness, and a commitment to national progress, the party can continue to earn the trust and confidence of the people and remain a strong governing force for many years to come.
