Content creators and TikTok users in Ghana’s Upper East Region are calling for discipline and responsible content creation on the platform, warning that abusive and indecent material could damage its reputation and influence on young users.
The appeal was made during discussions on the “Buuri Malema Sanga” programme on Bolga FM, where creators examined the rapid growth of TikTok among Ghanaian youth and its increasing role in entertainment, trends and self-expression.
Participants said the platform’s influence places a responsibility on users to produce content that is positive, educational and aligned with Ghanaian cultural values.
They expressed concern about rising instances of abusive language, misinformation, indecent content and other material they described as harmful, saying such trends risk exposing young audiences to negative influences while also shaping international perceptions of Ghanaian creators.
“TikTok is shaping how young people think and behave. If we fill it with division and disrespect, we lose the opportunity to use it for something meaningful,” one creator said during the discussion.
The creators encouraged users to focus on promoting Ghanaian culture, entrepreneurship, education, entertainment and social development, while also prioritising originality and respectful engagement over content designed solely to attract attention or views.
Participants in the discussion included Emmanuel Nyaaba Akurugo, Richard Awuni, Lawrence Akaluty, Abane Atindanbire and Desmond Abugre.
They also called on parents and guardians to monitor children’s online activity and guide them toward responsible use of social media.
The group said that with stronger discipline and responsible content creation, Ghanaian TikTok users can gain wider international recognition and create more opportunities for youth development and digital innovation.
